In this dream phase of Indian badminton we look across the profile and stats of one of the exciting band of shuttlers in the country right now,its none other than underrated Sai Praneeth. We are generally covered with news of Sindhu,Nehwal and Kidambi but we usually forget some players who may have not be able to win medal for the country but sure has lifted the country’s name in major tournaments through their performances.

Sai Praneeth,born in Hyderabad started playing badminton by observing the sport and was determined to be like Pullela Gopichand and finally he was the first shuttler to be trained by him in newly opened academy in 2005.Through his efforts and hardwork he managed to bag U-13 and U-16 National Champion title.

Sai broke into news when he beat then World no 2 Lee Chong Wei in All England Super Series 2016.In the same year,he bagged his first Career title Canada Open Grand Prix 2016.After that he had some fitness issues and skipped some championships and followed a 2 month strict fitness regime that proved to be a master stroke.In 2017,he managed to win his first Super Series title, Singapore Open by beating his counterapart Kidambi Srikanth. India’s Singles Coach Mulya Handoyo says “Sai is a player who is skilful in technique and he is happy that he is able to find success in several tour and I hope he can continue to challenge all the top players around the world”.

Talking about Pullela Gopichand,Sai says “Sir is so dedicated and Indian badminton is popular due to him and whenever I am low on confidence he boosts me everytime and encourages me to keep working on my skills”.

Sourabh Verma – The talented player who has underperformed in the recent years in the International Circuit but is still quite an quite a huge barrier for the Domestic Players as he registers a hattrick of Championship titles.So,today lets have a Spotlight on him !

Sourabh started playing Badminton at the age of 8 as his leisure activity which included Cricket and Football too.At the age of 14, he finally decided to make a career in Badminton and represented India.He says “It was tough in inital stages to maintain my finances as Badminton equipment are very costly but when I started performing,I got various scholarships that stabilized whole thing and everything turned fine”.

He joined Gopichand Academy at the age of 16 and his game improved and his School and College supported him and encouraged him to play as he had a clear aim and his performances were clearly depicting his potential.

Few years back he was asked about his Inspiration, Sourabh said “I am huge fan of Sachin Tendulkar and liked the concentration and focus he always had for the game”.Coming back after injury he has proved himself once again and we wish him good luck for all the future endevaours he has with respect to the game.

Bajrang Punia,born in Khudan district of Haryana has become a household name for the Country,but we bet you will know more after reading this article and feel motivated.

Bajrang started wrestling at the young age of 7 both due to his likeness for the sport and his father’s urge for one of his son’s to become a athlete and bring laurels to the country. He then started his actual training at Chhatrasal Stadium, Delhi in 2008 under the guidance of his role model(also Indian Wrestler) Yogeshwar dutt .On asked how Haryana produces talented athletes and wrestlers, he says “Haryana ke mitti ki khushboo ki alag hi baat h(Haryana’s soil has different fragrance)” and terms the milk and vegetables of the state perfect to build a body.

He terms the work of present government satisfactory to meet the needs of Wrestlers so that they can perform better but stresses on the fact that England and China like Countries are spending 41 cr per athelte,if we invest that much amount on our players,the result would be better in future.

On his fitness regime and diet,Bajrang tells “I follow Vegeterian diet and workout 5 hours daily” and has a clear aim at the 2020 Olympics and wants all Indian athletes to succeed.

Smriti Mandhana- Story of Indian Team’s Successful Opening Batsman

Smriti Born In Sangli,Maharashtra started playing Club Cricket at the age of 11 for Maharashtra, where she filled a form as an Opener.Initially a bit resistant to spinners,she Jokingly tells “I used pace of the fast bowlers and would go on making 20-25 runs and fall cheaply thereafter whenever slow bowlers would take the center stage”.

At the age of 15, Mandhana decided to choose Science as a Subject but her mother rightfully argued that she would not be able to handle Cricket with studies.Following her mother’s decision and in the same year,she piled up runs in with three centuries and a double century against Vadodra in U-19 Interstate One day tournament.With her good performances in the Challenger trophy and domestic season, she made strong impressions in the minds of National selectors and finally made her debut at the age of 17 against Bangladesh in 2013, when her batchmates were busy preparing for Board exams.

Fact : Mandhana used Rahul Dravid gifted bat in her initial matches and was happy to keep it as her lucky charm.

Since her debut,she never looked back and amassed runs at a pretty good average and contributing to India’s numerous victories.Complimenting to her performances,she was handed over contract by WBBL franchise but suffered a major setback when a knee injury put a halt in her career in January 2017.

She underwent surgery on 23rd Jan and marked date of 23rd June giving her 5 months to prepare for the first World cup match and terms the innings of 90 against England her best performance till date.Century against West Indies is still fresh among Cricket Fanatics.But India falled short and stood as a runner up in the World cup but people actually started following Women Cricket following the Successful Campaign.

Talking about her relationship with T-20 Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, She said “We both share common interests like sleeping and Playing Playstation.Just one difference is that she is a bit aggressive on the field and I like to keep it in my way by being Silent(laughs)”.

In the recently concluded NewZealand T20 series in Feb 2019 she was the top scorer for the team and has sure created a benchmark for other girls in the team that would inspire them to perform better in upcoming series.
